Juan Miranda-Hernandez was a young immigrant working at a local restaurant in Aurora. His life was tragically cut short in his home by a gang member intent on stealing Juan's hard-earned money. Juan was beaten and then shot in the back as he tried to run away. Days later his body was discovered by his brother. The case was initially declined for prosecution by the former DA in 2010, but when DA George Brauchler started his Cold Case Unit, John picked up the case and got to work. The killer was ultimately tried by John and convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. You can read more about the trial in the Sentinel's coverage here.
